Few words about Canadian Sphynx
The Canadian Sphynx is a very affectionate, gentle, intelligent and friendly cat. It is extremely contactable, gentle and non-aggressive. His optimism is infectious. He loves to be with people, actively participates in home life and is an inseparable companion of his caregivers. The Canadian Sphynx hate loneliness. If you like independent cats that take care of themselves and live their own lives on the side, the Canadian Sphynx is definitely not the cat for you! It is a cat that attaches itself to a person – its guardian, and not to the place where it lives. He misses his man whenever he loses sight of him even for a moment. Curious and brave, the "naked" is not troublesome in travel and is not stressed by staying in new places, provided that he is with his human. The Canadian Sphynx strives for a daily portion of caresses, likes to sit on your lap, as well as be stroked and cuddled. He feels like a full-fledged member of the family. It purrs very loudly. The range of sounds it makes is very rich.
History of the breed
The first Canadian sphynx was not born in Egypt at all, and their history is very short and begins in 1966. It was then that the first bald cat was born in Toronto, Canada. The birth of such a cat was the result of a genetic mutation that inhibited the natural growth of the coat. Prune, as it was called, gave rise to the breeders' work on the reproduction of a new breed, which was initially called the Moon Cat, and finally renamed the Canadian Sphynx. Already in the early 70s, as a result of crosses among a small number of cats, Canadian Sphynxes began to show health problems, which resulted in the withdrawal of recognition for this breed of cat by the CFA.
The breeding program of the Canadian Sphynx was started for the second time when in 1975 another hairless kitten was born in Waden, USA, and a year later another bald cat. At the same time, the first breeding of bald cats was founded in the Netherlands. Cooperation between breeders from Canada, the USA and the Netherlands gave rise to sphynx breeds of the American and European types. In the end, FIFe recognized the American-type sphynx as the breed standard.
After many years of selective breeding, Canadian Sphynxes were accepted by the CFA in 1998.
How to feed the Canadian Sphynx?
Sphynxes, due to their high energy consumption to maintain proper body temperature, eat large and require high-energy cat food. Choose high-quality wet or dry foods that provide all the necessary nutrients. These foods should be rich in protein and properly balanced in terms of fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. A raw food (BARF – Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) diet can be a good choice for sphynxes, but it is important that it is properly balanced and bacteriologically safe. It is recommended to consult your veterinarian before introducing this diet.
How to care for a Canadian Sphynx
Due to the lack of hair, sphynxes should be protected from excessive exposure to the sun – appropriate protective creams with a UV filter designed for animals should be used. In case of cold weather, before going for a walk the sphinx need to be dressed. Washing your cat with a damp washcloth should be done once a week to wash away the sebum that accumulates on the skin. Clean your cat's ears and claws once a week.
